We Need Lots of Help This Week

Win the Marshall Estate Cage for writing the winning entry.

We need an award winning entry for our Calendar and perhaps other material as well.  The theme of 2011 seems have evolved into California Ferrets - Our Story.  We are looking for about 500 words on what ferrets mean to you and why they should be legal.  The original purpose was for an introduction for the calendar but we will probably use it in our candidate and media outreach packets we are putting together.

Be creative and tell your story.  The deadline is Wednesday, July 7th.
A sincere thanks to Marshall Pet Products for donating the cage.  Check it out here

Please use any image of me for the calendar.  I support your cause very much.  Luise has sent you the picture already and I hope it helps!  Lots of love and ferrets to you.

best,

A Little Background...

My best friend is Jenny Shimizu, who was a "super model" appearing with the likes of Kate Moss, and the rest. She has made a film with Angelina Jolie, and has won numerous awards for her work in the gay and lesbian and as an influential Asian. She was a judge on TV last season "Make Me a Supermodel". She loves ferrets and has mentioned legalizing them many times in interviews. She has recently taken pictures with the love of her  life, her Roxy ferret. I am confident she would be into helping any way she could. Let me know if you want me to contact her. thanks for all you do!

Louise B.

Above is MooKey who died in a car accident.  I filed the story under calendar submissions then read my mistake.  So to MooKey's human - hang in there, we share your grief, it could be any of us.

I'm a New Yorker, and ferrets are illegal here too (because of a ridiculously antiquated law).  Thank God that we're able to take an extremely short trip (30-45 minute ride) to Westchester, New Jersey, or Long Island to purchase precious ferrets, so I'm rooting for you and all Californian's on your quest for the Legalization of Ferrets.

Honesty, it's 2010 and we're dealing with the continuous de-evolution of society's thoughts regarding ferrets - that they're predatory and in the same vein as "rodents."  Okay, they might be predatory to lets say a musky sock.  Really...  In fact, ferrets should be on the top of the list of "Best Pet Choice Ever" if only for those who require copious amounts of comic relief on a daily basis.

I'm writing because I have to chose a flea control product for my Sassy Sydney, and I'd like your/your reader's recommendation. I spoke with Sydney's Vet., and she recommends Advantage, but I've researched it's effectiveness on ferrets and many ferret owners do not think much of it.

I'd like to take Sydney for a romp in our Central Park, but as an over-protective Mom, I do not want to subject my girl to any nasty critters making their way onto her body and causing her any distress.

Your response would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
J. Sotolongo

Calendar Production Started

Who would have thought that making a calendar would be so much work.  The 2011 Legalize Ferrets calendar isn't any calendar - its a calendar with a soul.  Which we need lots of help putting in.

Last Saturday we had a photo shoot and proofs of the photos have been sent in.  Here are a few of the favorites:

But - we don't have enough photos.  We are asking a certain president of Ferrets Anonymous with a penchant for photography to provide another four or five.

According to the plan - which I am leaving in the hands of our graphic artist, Heidi, the backgrounds are going to be replaced with a gradient.  To make the photos more interesting and useful we are going to include a ferret tip for each month.

Here's another instance of when we need your help. Provide tips for ferret owners.

I'm going to go first since this is a pet peeve of mine, people who think their ferrets came with all the shots they need.

When pet stores tell you your new ferret has had all his or her shots - they mean for a baby.  Ferrets should be vaccinated against canine distemper at at 8, 11, and 14 weeks of age, which means you will need to schedule two more vaccinations.  Canine distemper is 100% fatal.

We only need 11 more ferret health tips - so please send them in to CLIFFNotes@legalizeferrets.org.

Another Way To Help - 12 Personal Stories Needed

Besides the 12 tips for ferret owners we want 12 stories how ferrets have brought joy into our lives.  Here is what we have so far:

My first ferret has changed my life. She is just this little bundle of dances, dooks, craziness, and love. When I come home from work the first thing I want to do is see her face and get kisses. She is the best pet I could have ever asked for, and even when she makes a mess its impossible to look at her and be mad, your heart just melts. The best part of my day is hearing her dook and knowing she is happy, it always puts a smile on my face. With out ferrets in my life I wouldn't be as happy.
Charissa and Riko
I  adopted both (and Meeko's sister, Fiona, and Neko's sister, Cartouche) on the same day in 2006 from a Navy family.  I waited 50 years to get my first ferret, Harley.  All my life i had wanted a ferret, but i have lived in California.  A friend in Indiana introduced me to the forum Ferret City and there i met a fellow Californian who needed to find a home for her ferret (a dark-eyed white) Harley.  Then i adopted 3 ferrets (Nitro, Turbo and Sammy Ray) who were abandoned in an apartment building and then I adopted Meeko and Fiona!
Terrie J.

I have two of the best ferrets in the whole world. I spend all day with them playing and giving kisses and belly tickles. They are my life. My ferrets keep me calm in moments of stress, all I have to do is look at there adorable little faces and my heart melts and so does my stress. They are the sweetest, cuddliest creatures I have ever known. If I didn't have them in my life I would be so sad. I love my ferrets so much.

My story is simple i got one ferret through a friend of my husband, he thought it was a weasel. I took Mushu to the vet and found out he was about 2 years old we had him for 4 more years before we lost him to cancer but he was the first for me and he made a room light up. I will miss him terribly. I have enclosed the last picture of him and his friend Missy that we bought about 1-1/2 years later. she is a pistol. Mushu is the white one and Missy is the sable

Thank you. Marianne S. From So. California

My husband and I have owned ferrets since 2004.  Our business started at 2, peaked at 13 & is resting comfortably at 8.  They have brought so much joy into our lives.  They were especially helpful when my husband, who is active duty Air Force, was deployed to Kuwait & Afghanistan.  They kept my spirits up while my husband served our country.  They are treated like respected members of the family.  Even my mother has come to call them her grandferrets!  I honestly don't know what I would do without the love & happiness my ferrets give me!

Looking for a Legislative Sponsor - And Editorial Support

The editorial board is a group of people, usually at a publication, who dictate the tone and direction the publication's editorial policy will take.

At a newspaper, the editorial board usually consists of the editorial page editor, and editorial writers. Some newspapers include other personnel as well.

Editorial boards meet on a regular basis to discuss the latest news and opinion trends and discuss what the newspaper should say on a range of issues. They will then decide who will write what editorials and for what day. When such an editorial appears in a newspaper, it is considered the institutional opinion of that newspaper.
from Wikipedia

The June 2nd elections aren't quite finalized.  The winners haven't all been declared, but once  they are we are planning on sending every candidate for state assembly, state senate and governor a media kit asking them to sponsor a ferret legalization bill in 2011.

We need to provide background info, our EIR pre-study, photos - whatever we can to put together a professional and convincing argument.

We also want to seek support from the state's editorial boards.  Wouldn't it be wonderful to have some support from editorial board across the state say "you know what - it is time ferrets became legal in California" as a ferret legalization bill winds it way through the legislature.

Here's another way to help - Send us info on Editorial Boards in your area (California only, please)

Please send in any contact info regarding the editorial board for any newspaper you read or any other media such as television or web.  Please give them a call and ask where one would send a media kit.

If you have any experience writing or assembling a media kit - I'd like to hear from you even more.

Here is a list of newspapers where we'd like to send our media kit but we need to call first to get or confirm the information.

We will list all media kits sent out to news publications and their response.  The big problem will probably being taken seriously.  When we started Ferrets Anonymous is 1993 we were told the issue was not serious enough to merit attention.  But there are 5,000 subscribers to CLIFFNotes - I think we can make enough noise to merit attention.

Trouble in the Shetlands

North of the Scottish mainland are a group of islands called the Shetland Islands and I was surprised to read in Wikipedia that feral ferrets are said to exist in these islands.  So I quickly sent off an email to a Shetland Islands government official - who unlike our own Department of Fish and Game had an answer the next day.

Thanks for your email which has been forwarded to me.

I work for the Shetland Island Council on Animal Health Schemes and can no way claim to be any sort of expert on local wildlife. However I will do my best!

The 'feral ferrets' which you refer to are known locally as polecats. However it is my understanding that they are actually not polecats but feral ferrets and are described more officially as polecat-ferrets.

I think if you would like more detailed information, could I refer you to either Scottish Natural Heritage, Shetland Branch or Shetland Biological Records Centre.

There will be people at either location highly knowledgable about these peerie beasties.  I am
European Polecats - sure look familiar
afraid however that you may not find that the polecats have many supporters as they are considered a pest in Shetland owing to their egg eating habits and the importance of Shetland for breeding birds.
I had a particularly tame one living in our byre over the winter

Best wishes
Hilary Liebeschuetz

A follow up email provided this info:

feral polecat-ferrets have been in Shetland for at least 20 years, probably originating from animals imported from mainland UK to control rabbits.

Reading the Wikipedia article on polecats produced this result:

Hybridisation
Polecats (mainly dark phenotype) are able to hybridise with the rare European mink and have fertile hybrids.[6] In some parts of England the abandoning of domestic ferrets has led to ferret-polecat hybrids living in the wild. Often hybrids have a less distinct facial mask, light throat patches and lighter fur especially on the undersides. However there are some hybrids that are almost indistinguishable from pure polecats.
The native polecat has made a recovery across much of central and southern England thanks in part to reintroduction programmes. Recent DNA studies have shown that the pure native polecats have become firmly reestablished and are not becoming greatly hybridised.[7] It has been suggested that the hybrid animals containing domesticated ferret genes are less well adapted to life in the wild than native polecats as the hybrids tend to be distributed near or beyond the main polecat range.

I'm sure there are going to be a number of people angry with me for putting something  which could be construed as negative towards ferret legalization in CLIFFNotes.  But I believe in always sticking with the truth.  We actually have a number of subscribers from the United Kingdom - perhaps one of them can shed further enlightenment on this subject.

September 25th Legalize Ferrets Revival
-Program to be Announced Next Week!

Our September 25th event to be held in Concord (East Bay area) will have the program published and tickets for sale next week.  I am particularly excited about this event as so many things are coming together in terms of the EIR, elections, legislation.  I believe this is the best line up of speakers we've ever done.  A video documentary will also be produced in conjunction with the event, with some filming done prior.  So far we've lined up Star B from San Francisco and Kimberly B (Northern California Ferret Alliance) we are looking for one more person.

In Conclusion

So much going on.  I was going to grovel for money to help pay for the candidate surveys and media kits - but a nice big check came from our Wysong affiliate which allows me to breath a little easier.  Your purchase of Wysong really helps so if you haven't tried it - please do so.

Expect groveling in the weeks ahead as the FINAL EIR report arrives and we need to pay it and arrange to pay for the actual EIR at a cost of $7,000.  We better sell a lot of calendars!
