Readers Column
My name is LeeAnn and I own a beautiful sable Suki. I rescued her about 3 years ago through someone I contacted here. Anyways, I will be moving to Humboldt County for school and need some vet and renting advice. First off, my ferret has insulinoma, which is being treated with daily BID doses of prednisone + ferretone. With this, she needs about monthly BG checks(sooner if need be, later if shes doing great which she has been). Which vet in the humboldt area deals with ferrets AND is experienced working with them? On the other note, I will be renting, and obviously, for some odd reason, ferrets are illegal in Cali. So I should not tell the renter, right? And if I should get caught (hope not) is there any one in the area that would watch her for a while until i get it straightened out?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
LeeAnn and Suki
Freddy Keurger Ferret Lives Here

My last apartment was really unusual; a two story one bedroom. You walk into the kitchen/living room and then go downstairs to the bedroom, bathroom and walk in closet. I am downstairs one day watching TV and I hear someone coming down the stairs. I live alone and had been home all day with no visitors. The front door is at the top of the stairs and is really noisy and I know it is locked so this makes no sense, but the heavy slow foot steps coming down the stairs cannot be denied. Someone big is coming down the stairs and they do not care that I can hear them. Slow steady heavy footsteps, *bump*... *bump*... *bump*...coming down the stairs. And I am afraid. It is spring and I have the big sliding glass door open and I can hear several people enjoying the nice day right outside the door so I know that all I have to do is scream and at least one will call 911 and maybe even help me, but still ... *bump*... *bump*... *bump*... My heart is beating strongly, my mouth goes dry and my hands are shaking... *bump*...*bump*... *bump*...I can see about the bottom third of the stairway and the first thing I will see is knees and waist long before whoever it is can see me but nothing. *bump*...*bump*...*bump*... He must be nearing the bottom by now? But nothing... *bump*... *bump*... *bump*... Still nothing. How many stairs are there anyway? *bump*...*bump*...*bump*... Nothing *bump*...*bump*... *bump* ... nothing... *BUMP* and there she is. My teeny tiny little female ferret Shiva, the Cosmic Dancer, has pulled an enormous squash out of the groceries and drug the thing all the way down the stairs by the stem. *bump*...*bump*...*bump*...

EIR Report Wrapping Up
 |
| The strangest "found ferret" call we ever received. Turned out to be a spotted skunk. Click image to enlarge |
For the past year Dr Geo Graening at Sacramento State University has been collecting the data needed to file the actual Environmental Impact Report needed to hopefully legalize ferrets in California. With the general election coming up we've been asking him for a report that we can use to solicit support from candidates for statewide office and editorial boards around the state.
It's not quite ready and he doesn't want it released it until it is done. I can only give a very brief outline of what he has said. Hopefully we can include more next week.
The survey of North American Agencies (as it is officially titled) failed to produce any new information. No feral populations or effects on wildlife. Minimal concerns about bites and rabies. He said the report will be mostly, but not entirely to our liking.
After the research is done the report goes to the California Fish and Game Commission where they hopefully will produce a Notice of Preparation. They select the party to actually file the EIR. They can damage our prospects at this point by stalling or accepting a bid that we can not afford. Therefore - our grassroots organization is very important. We can do this!
Three Emails Show How California Ferret Bans Hurts People and Damages our Economy
These three emails came in pretty much back-to-back. Wish we could be of more help.
Disabled Student Not Welcome to California With His Ferret
Is there any type of permit available for special circumstances when it pertains to ownership of a ferret in California? I have a disabled son that is wanting to move to California to attend college and be with his brother who is in the military in San Deigo. Is it possible to get any kind of permit or waiver for him to own this pet? Quite frankly, he will cancel his plans to move there and forget the whole thing if he cant take his pet. I really need to see if i can help him out here. Any information you can supply would be super.

After explaining that you can't get a permit, that we have more ferrets in California than any other state and it is unwise to take your ferret outside in California - this is his further response:
This is the most ridiculous law I have ever heard of. This ferret has been my son's pet for well over 5 yrs. He got the ferret before he became disabled in a car accident so to ask him to give it up would be like asking him to go back and relive his days after the accident. He has overcome the odds and made UNBELIEVABLE strides in his comeback. He laid in a coma for 4 ½ months, spent another 6 months getting well enough to be transferred to a brain injury center. After almost 2yrs of that and therapy, he can once again walk and talk well enough to take care of himself. He has been accepted by a couple different colleges out there but if Cheech is not welcome, neither of them will go. As far as not being able to go out in public, that will not work either. Those 2 are inseparable. The walks in the park, and the ball playing would have to be confined to indoors. Another thing that they would miss.
British Couple Offered Job in the US - But...
My name is Bekky. And me, my partner, Rob and our two beautiful girlys (Dora, albino and Fizz, angora) live in the United Kingdom.
We have been excited recently as my partner has been given a dream job offer in San Francisco.
Unfortunately, theres a high percentage we can’t take this now due to this dumb “ban” on ferrets. I won't leave my girls behind for someone else to take.
I have been reading through your site with some great enthusiasm and wanted to ask how long do you think this ban will go on for and do you think its coming to an end …? I know that’s probably a very tough question as the ban has been going on for such a long time.
Cross Country Truck Driver - Can He and Ferret Drive California Highways?
I need a little help... I have two wonderful fuzzies and I unfortunatly have to drive a truck over the road., since thats the only work i can find...
I have a lot of stops in California! I would bring them with, if not for that ... I can't imagine being away from them... What option do I have? What would you do?
Thanks Ruben
$100 Reward Keeps Our Ads on Craigslist
Normally we post three ads a day on Craigslist sites in California asking people to sign up for CLIFFNotes or join the 3000 Club. We are frequently flagged and removed. At first I found this confusing because after reading the Craigslist user terms I didn't feel we were in violation. But then people would email and say they will keep flagging our ads because they feel ferrets should be illegal. This is especially common in Fresno, Sacramento, Humboldt and Modesto. Never happens in Southern California.
Here is a typical anti-ferret ad on the Humboldt Craigslist:

Does everyone KNOW WHY ferrets are illegal in California? Has anyone ever asked?
Any animal that is not native to the state and capable of naturalizing (i.e. living and propagating in the environment) is illegal because it threatens the indigenous species! Ferrets naturalize! They are capable of propagating easily in the wild here in California. Ask Hawaii how well the importation of the mongoose worked out... The state bird is now an endangered species. Ferrets also carry Canine Distemper. How come I have never met anyone with a ferret that has been vaccinated for canine distemper? Because they don't know if the vaccines are effective on ferrets. So all the uneducated people who blab about how California is unfair should try to EDUCATE themselves.

| In Response I posted this ad - which has not been flagged and deleted. |

The above post is from someone woefully uninformed and highly opinionated.
Our almost done EIR research has once again failed to discover any feral ferrets in North America. The only feral ferrets in the world - so far New Zealand and the Shetland Islands are in fact polecat-ferret hybrids.
So - either produce your documentation and collect $100 - or become informed and be part of the solution to the problems we ferret owners face because of this kind of mis-information.

This email was supposed to go out to 70,000 pet loving Californians
|
A lot of news is about to break through. We are expecting the work from Sacramento State University to cause a splash. Perhaps ferret legalization will make some positive news.
We are working on media kits to send to candidates for state assembly, state senate and the Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman campaigns. We are also compiling a list of editorial boards in California in hopes of getting some support.
I hope by next week to have an OpEd piece ready to submit to California news organizations. Its time to start a public discussion and build some support out in public. There are many people woefully ignorant and opposed to our right to keep domestic ferrets as pets.
The 2011 Legalize Ferrets calendar is coming along. My thanks to Bonnie T for going over the '12 tips for ferret owners" with a fine tooth comb. Bonnie - that's what happens when you complain! Now the problem is fitting the tips into the calendar in an artisically pleasing way. I am leaning against including the personal stories we have accumulated for the calendar - just not enough room. I'll use them in CLIFFNotes so all that work doesn't go to waste.
We are about to encounter a lot more expenses too. Expenses are pretty tightly controlled but there is a little fear of over-committing. Please keep that in mind and if you haven't joined the 3000 Club - now would be a good time.
We ordered 70,000 emails to go out with this message. It was supposed to go out Friday but I think it got stuck in the server. I hope to see a spurt of growth as we head into the Fall.
In Conclusion
No shortage of goings on!
Thank you for supporting us. We are going to do what not so long ago seemed hopeless but there are still a lot of obstacles left. Stay tuned.
