Parents Need a Ferret Education

Hi I'm a 14 year old girl and i really want a ferret. I've heard a lot about them and I've researched them nonstop. Also i think they are adorable.  But the thing is since i live in California, my parents wont let me get a ferret because they are illegal. - Also because my mom thinks it is a rodent and she thinks that we can get diseases from them that can kill us. Please help me try to convince her and tell me what i should say to her. I am such a ferret lover!!

We will publish the answers to Lisette's plight in the next CLIFFNotes
Pair of Ferrets needs New Home

Due to employment related relocation I have a nice pair of ferrets ready to be adopted into a good home.  One is 3 year old male and other is 2 year old female, named Barney and Betty.  They are a very compatible couple. Both have sable coats.  Photo available.  Can include a large cage and supplies.   I ask a donation to Ferrets Anonymous in lieu of an adoption fee.
Ferrets are in Pacific Beach (San Diego). Please email Peter if you are interested.

Wysong Creates Generous Affiliate Program for Ferret Legalization EIR

Besides an initial generous donation, Wysong, a manufacturer of natural dog, cat, ferret and horse foods has created an affiliate program for us to help raise additional funds to pay for the Environmental Impact Report, which is currently in the information-gathering stage at Sacramento State University.  If you purchase Wysong foods using the links from this newsletter or from the links on www.ferretsanon.com or www.legalizeferrets.org, we receive a small amount and so far we are at an extra $160 to help pay for our research expenses.  Thank you, Wysong!

Marshall Pet Products and Ferret Depot already stepped forward to help fund the EIR and we are forever grateful!

Marshall Pets Q & A

Question:

What diet should I feed my ferret?

Answer:

Your ferrets nutrition is the most important decision you'll make for your ferrets long-term health. This question is complicated by the mounds of information, both good and bad, that can be found when you start looking for an answer. So let me start with the basics: Ferrets are strict carnivores.  Your ferret shouldn't be given any dairy, sugars or carbohydrates  as treats - these foods can cause blockages and major health problems. A lot of people will look at Protein amounts as a good thing but not when it is plant based protein – soy and other plant protein derivatives are not digestible.

- So what should you feed your little fuzzy? Marshall Premium Ferret Diet. It is the only diet designed for ferrets by the ferret specialist. It is also the only diet that is scientifically evaluated on a daily basis, if we ever find a better food we’ll change what is in our bag. Our diet is made with fresh meat and a low temperature, vacuum drying process that protects the proteins. That makes our food easily digestible and ensures your ferret receives the maximum nutritional value.

Note From Pat:  Marshall Ferrets is paying for half the cost of our Environmental Impact Report, so I thought a little disclosure was in order.  But who threw them such a softball question?!

I've heard that 70% of the pet ferrets sold in the US are Marshall ferrets and if you check for two dots tattooed in the ear, that would appear to be a low number - seems more like 90%.  Nobody knows more about ferrets than the people at Marshalls.  So go ahead - don't be afraid to ask them the really tough questions! Please send them to ferrets@marshallpet.com

Finally, A Crystal Ball To Tell Our Future
It's My Birthday and This is What I Wanted!

We've often wished we could use a crystal ball to tell our future.  To make my birthday party a little more interesting we are bringing in a certified psychic.

Will the EIR be ignored?  Will child-eating ferrets be found in the wilderness of New Mexico (the mythical el chupacabra)?  Or will we be successful and finally achieve ferret legalization in California?

This astrologer will use THE STAR CASTER, her own unique creation, and do a group reading about the present and future of our ferret club.

You should also be able to get your own individual reading too! - Depends on how many people attend, but it will be interesting to see our psychic at work.

If you don't happen to recall - I'm turning 51 on Dec 25th.  On Christmas morning I'm heading out to Las Vegas to pick up two babies and returning the next day.

Pat's 51st Birthday Party
Sunday December 27th from 3 to 6 pm

Meet the babies (and the oldsters)
Please email dsrj@cox.net or call 619-303-0645 for more info

On Sunday, Dec 27th we're having a party.  We will have a Philipino buffet and red velvet cake.  If you'd like to bring presents, please bring anything that Linda Soule's ferret shelter could use - because I already have plenty.  Linda has mentioned Costco Gift Cards as her most prized gift.

The party is from 3 to 6pm.  Let me know if you are coming and I will give you my La Mesa (San Diego area) address.

I hope to see you there! Please email dsrj@cox.net or call 619-303-0645 to reserve or for more information.
2009 OCFerrets Holiday Party News

OCFerrets held their Annual Holiday Party on  Saturday, December 12, 2009 in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. Despite a deluge of rain and thick fog that blew in late in the afternoon and into the evening, there were about 30 people in attendance from areas as far South as San Diego, and as far North as Redondo Beach. Just when we thought we'd have to call in Rudolph to help everyone find their way to the lake where the party was being held, we foudn the room full of happy ferret folk. - Just about everyone who was present came bearing gifts of much-needed items for OCF's use in taking care of ferrets entrusted to them. There was a big assortment of foods, deserts, and other delights courtesy of many who spent the day prior to the event baking away. A Holiday gift exchange for humans, as well as for ferrets was held - and attendees were allowed to ferret away items from each other a total of three times before they were allowed to tote the gifts away to their own hidey holes for good. Additionally, OCFerrets had a Holiday Bake Sale, OCFerrets ferret bedding, T-shirts, and a brand-new 18-month calendar on sale - all to help raise funds for the organization. A big thank-you to all who attended, we sincerely hope that you had a great time! Thank you wholeheartedly for your gracious gifts and kind donations to OCFerrets. We'll make sure that it goes a long way towards making the lives of unwanted ferrets more comfortable while they wait for new homes.

(If you would like to purchase an OCFerrets 18-month calendar, please email Dawn M. at ocferrets@yahoo.com. Calendars are $20 each, shipping included.)

In Conclusion

Another week waiting for the 2nd of 4 reports for the EIR.  How great that we are almost at the half way mark!  I can envision the end of the effort to legalize ferrets in California - just before I head into the nursing home.

Which segues nicely with my Birthday party.  C'mon people, don't I have any friends?  If you are in the San Diego area I hope you are free Dec 27th between 3 and 6.  Come meet the babies, maybe get your fortune told and hear a psychic's prediction of our success or failure in 2010.

If you still need a Christmas present - we've got calendars.  I think they finally made money, and they did bring new people into our ferret legalization efforts.

Be sure to send in photos of your ferrets under the Christmas tree for next weeks issue of CLIFFNotes!
